WTO negotiations to continue

According to Bridges, representatives from the G7 are meeting at the WTO to continue talks as part of the ongoing (read: not quite dead) Doha Round. Negotiations broke down earlier in the summer at a failed mini-ministerial meeting in Geneva. So is it back to the drawing board for Doha? Not quite.

Trade diplomats will try to salvage the significant progress that was made before the talks earlier in the summer broke down. Perhaps most importantly, negotiators will try to find a resolution to the dispute over the Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) that was felt to be the main cause of the earlier breakdown. That the talks were going well, or as well as could be expected (before the SSM issue became intractable) is a good reason not to let the round slide. At any rate, every little helps, even if the round itself cannot be completed any time soon.
